By Chih-Lin Chou
Montreal, Quebec
In the summer of 2007 Chih-Lin Chou, guzheng, and Yang Li, erhu, came together from a common cultural heritage to explore the possibilities of composing / improvising pieces bathed in Chinese tradition, but seen through more modern eyes. This collaborative procedure resulted in series of pieces entitled Reflections Upon Nature, of which Flowering is one movement. The flower in the minds of the performers is the Chinese peony, a plant that bridges the rapid growth of spring, and the stability of early summer. In many ways this piece reflects the rapid the rapid growth and maturation of the musical relationship of Chih-Lin Chou and Yang Li.
