In 1979, CTV, a national TV network, aired "Campus Giveaway" - a segment of the W5 Program alleged that foreign students were taking the legitimate places of Canadians in universities. This premise has no factual
basis, and more disturbingly, the program repeatedly showed Chinese faces.
Most of the statistics and comments quoted were misleading and
meant to incite hostility towards visible minorities, in
particular the Chinese. It labeled the Chinese students as foreigners and ignored the possibilities that they might be landed immigrants or Canadian citizens whose families had been here for generations. The Chinese Communities across Canada were enraged. They came together and formed many "Ad Hoc committees against W5" from coast to coast to protest the
program.
